Dr. Louis Tompkins Wright served in the Army Medical Corps during World War I. During his service, he developed and improved vaccination technique that was used to protect soldiers from smallpox. He later became an expert in treatment of head injuries.
After the war, Dr. Wright worked primarily in New York. In 1919, he became the first African American staff physician at New York's Harlem Hospital. Later, he became the first African American surgeon hired by the New York City Police Department.
